Maniacal 4
Приєднався 23 вер 2009
To encourage people that music-making is possible in any setting and on any level, M4 started a UA-cam video series called 'Hotel Jams' - songs played by ear and simply arranged in casual, everyday environments. Sketches of the arrangements are free to download at maniacal4.com. M4 concerts frequently feature improvised programming, audience requests, guest artists, and audience participation.
From recent collaborations with youth choirs, to a string/vocal septet of O Holy Night, to a sixteen-trombones-and-rhythm performance of Led Zeppelin in Rotterdam, M4 believes music is a side of the human experience to be explored and shared with all.

Update
We haven't posted in a long time and are all working in different areas within the industry. Matt is looking to develop an online course and would love some thoughts about what to discuss!

Maniacal 4's group process

We took some time with Karen, our manager, to sit down and talk about the process that we go through every time we go on tour. This process has helped us grow as a group, and the group has helped us grow as individuals. Since this developed through years of tweaking, seeing what worked and what didn't, hopefully it will help some of you along the way! Video: Matt Jefferson Maniacal 4: @matt_man...

Love the swing on this!
Goes to show that that song needs all of the different instruments to make it what it is. A masterpiece isn’t made by just a master but by all the different instruments mastered and combined to make perfection
This is tits!

hello! mrs ally was my choir teacher when i was in the 6th grade, and our choir performed with you guys that year. i’m now 22 years old now and i still remember that time very fondly, and it always makes me happy when renegade comes on. thank you for that amazing experience when i was 11.
Your web page won't open on any device I've tried it on.
I want to do distorted flute like you do the trombone. Could you tell me how you get that sound?
The bass trombonist is excellent But no one gonna talk about how baller that pianist is?!
As a trombone player cam I have sister husband's, you guys are fricking amazing! And so hard to ever know trombone players 😅
Exalent performance especially at 4:04
Your website has been hacked sir
As a teacher of all band and orchestra instruments, I wish I knew more about pitch adjustment techniques on low brass, when to use and not use the triggers on the larger trombones, transitioning students from a small tenor trombone to larger trombones and even baritone and tuba, and the fundamentals of playing larger brass instruments that might or are different from playing their smaller instrument cousins. My beginning band director helped me a great deal when I switched from Alto to Baritone saxophone over 40 years ago and those lessons have stayed with me to this day. Band directors who are not low brass players need the basics to make transitioning students easier. Thank you for the update and the question. Keep us posted on the educational side of your plans here and it would be great if M4 got together for another video. You guys had such a great sound and great arrangements. Thank you.
Great job everyone. I am Trombonist and have to say that was technically perfect. You hit every piece of the song. You guys are amazing.
Затрамбонили трамбобоньку😂👍🏻
I love all your videos
The harmonies in this rendition make the hair on my arms stand up... just STELLAR work.
Low brass kicks ass! -A Tuba player who is proud to call you my brothers.
It’s been a while
Thank you Matt, I admired your playing with maniacal 4, so happy to hear you are working hard in nashville. You are one of the good guys!
Wonderful, Great job fella's!
I am new to the trombone. But, in any area, I like to think about the philosophical, or the "why" issues, and it always comes back to being grateful to God for the gift of His creation, and for the forgiveness He offers through the Lord Jesus Christ. When will we die? We don't know, but we need to be prepared for it. We will die, and then we will be judged. All our attitudes and actions. Did we seek to please ourselves, or to give God glory? Thanks for your music!
Dificil e vc ta sonhando e aparecer o anuncio do ifood 😢
Thanks for the update! So having played for more years than I remember, mouthpiece selection or at that, even horn selection (f-trigger, tenor, large bore tenor, etc) has never come up as part of education. I just kept trying different mouthpieces until it "worked". But I wish my teacher back in high school taught us where different mouthpieces are appropriate for different parts, music, range, etc. Fundamentals. I was given a horn with the stock mouthpiece and just winged it.
Welcome back! After returning to the Metroplex I've met up with and played with Alex Dubrov a couple of times. Over the years, I've met a lot of students who had been inspired by y'all for sure!
I was fortunate enough to have pretty good music education growing up. But I never REALLY developed my ear until college, just kinda got by. Fine tuning each note on each partial is a skill I wish more of the people I play with in community groups knew how to do, and not just the bones, but tuba/euph as well. Also, wish one of my teachers had had the talk with me about pushing in my tuning slide and adjusting my embouchure differently with some Caruso exercises to really develop my sound. That came way too late for me.
Something I've been thinking about since I started teaching lessons is what motivates us to play. I think there's a lot of goals that become obvious once you reach a certain level, but it can be hard to close that gap, or find things to work on in the interim. I try to transcribe something each of my students will have fun playing, since I remember being motivated early on to play things like Hedwigs Theme, or Somewhere Over the Rainbow, even when I didn't have a lot of direction otherwise. I also think it's extremely important to get a student's playing into a place where it's comfortable, and relatively tension-free early on, because that so profoundly affects the experience of playing. I didn't pick up as many bad habits as some people do, but I still had a lot of things to re-learn once I got to college, and only then discovered how comfortable I could feel while playing. If only we all grew up with teachers that were able to keep us honest in those domains. Everything feels so much better when you 1 - play more often, 2 - eliminate unnecessary tension, and 3 - simplify your approach to the instrument. That's been my experience, at least.
Wow I just discovered your music this week. I haven’t played my trombone in almost 30 years and have it out trying to re learn it again. Thanks for the inspiration.
as opposed to general playing tips, I'd love to hear the thought processes that you've taken on and utilized throughout your time in the One O' Clock/M4/studying with Vern & Jan/etc!
As a proud tuba player, I often found a proficient adeptness to pick up the correct keys to the songs I listened to. I could pick up my instrument and follow along up until I couldn't hear the bass line anymore. Also something I took for granted as a teenager is both Cardio and proper breathing exercises. We use higher volumes of air to create our sound. So it's important to keep up the breathing.
I'm dumfounded by improvisation. Other than learning blues scales and playing any notes in that scale, what are the next couple baby steps? Do I need to seriously study music theory so I can decode new chords every measure or two? Are there other scales you can play over certain chord patterns? Thanks!!
I don't have anything to add, but thanks for the update. I've always been curious about what you all were up to musically.
One thing that I never was taught was tonguing. Like, music teachers don't really go over what happens in the mouthpiece past buzzing, so when I was in an ensemble an was told "We mostly do 'Dah' tonguing", I lacked the context to know what that meant I should do.
Man, I loved the videos. I played bass trombone my last year of high school, and always loved how I was the hidden hero in most jazz pieces😂. Bass trombone adds a little, and ties everything together. Hope to see more videos from you guys in the future!!!
What has happened to these guys?
Wow…..just WOW!!
Il ya furious jumper en train de jouer😂😂😂
it's such a gift anytime someone take the time to do an Owen Pallett song <3 thanks for putting this out there i love it
So very happy to see you guys do what I was always told could not be done in high school! Trombones playing lead "vocals"!!! Thank you for proving that theory wrong!!! Great work!!! I enjoyed it very much!!!
dang!
wow Played low brass in college. T’bone, euphonium WOW
I wish I could here this song in 2013 December
Pa mal sa❤😅😮
waiting for more content
I watch this so many times in my childhood because my dad is a professional trombone player and I had every part memorized. The fact that this is still on my for you page is awesome.
Loved it!
outstanding
I remember when I first came across this, maybe 2 months after it was posted. I wish they were still doing new stuff.
Amazingly beautiful! Thank you!
Saw the trombones and out of pure curiosity listened in to see how four of them could pull off Jane. Turns out when the four guys driving them are that talented, it not only works, it was preee ty awesome. Nice job guys!
Fantastic
